Getting a mammogram once is not enough; it must be done each year. Mammograms can detect cancer early, when it is easier to treat and before it is big enough to feel or cause symptoms. Women should begin getting regular mammograms at age 40. If a woman of any age notices symptoms of breast cancer such as a lump, discharge from the nipple, or pain in the breast, she should see her doctor and talk about having a mammogram in order to detect any problems. The Perry County Health Department urges all women 40 and over to get a mammogram every year so that any problems can be detected and treated early. The health department has programs to help women with or without insurance receive a mammogram.
Am I eligible for a mammogram?
Women age 40 or older and women under the age of 40 with a first degree relative who have been diagnosed with breast cancer are eligible for screenings on the mobile unit. If you are under the age of 40 and have an area of concern in either breast, please contact the health department so that you can be connected with the most appropriate mammography screening services.
Women with Insurance
The James Cancer Center mobile mammography unit visits Perry County 6-8 times a year to assist women in need of breast cancer screenings. Your insurance can be billed to cover the cost of the mammogram. To make an appointment or receive more information call 740-342-5179.
Women without Insurance
If you do not have insurance OR your insurance does not cover the cost of a mammogram, you may be eligible for a free mammogram. Contact the Health Department to schedule an appointment at 740-342-5179.
